Pros: The Holy War! Imagine sitting down at 9:30pm central on the Saturday after Thanksgiving and seeing the Big 12 logo on the field when BYU-Utah kicks off. Maybe Iowa State has more in common with this school than we think. This fanbase actually cares about sports, which is more than you can say about the rest of their conference.Ĭons: The football program has been consistently mediocre for most of my life, aside from a few flashes. Arizona gets a bump because you get a sense that they actually want to join the Big 12. Tucson is a fun potential road trip as well. What’s stopping them from doing it again if they get a better offer? 2. How can Colorado be this bad at football? Don’t kid yourselves, Buffs fans. Look, I’m an Iowa State fan, so this is a little bit of a pot and kettle situation. It seems like they actually want a reunion.Ĭons: About the sports part. By now it’s obvious that they never should’ve left in the first place. Colorado just feels like a Big 12 school. Pros: Maybe it’s nostalgia, and maybe it’s the fact that we can see a conference with Colorado. Once that looks like a possibility, Louisville and Pittsburgh will immediately jump a bunch of these schools. There’s no ACC schools on the list right now. There’s been a number of schools linked to the conference, and I say it’s time to actually power rank them. So what are we supposed to do while we wait? How about a little old fashioned debate? Conference realignment is all the rage right now, and the Big 12 is in a position of strength for once. We’re on week 5 or 6 of being about a week away from news dropping. In fact, I’d probably “parlay” some bad news for the football program with some news about the conference coming soon. I don’t know why but this one feels especially long and lacking in things to talk about. Welcome to the longest part of the offseason. In whatever conference Miami resides, the Canes are expected to be a dominant team.Hello friends. Judging by Canes Warning, Mario Cristobal’s program is poised for a return to greatness. John Chancey, writing for the site argues the Big Ten is a better fit for Clemson than the SEC. The claim made by Chancey is that “SEC cultures are a dreadful fit” for Clemson.ĭown in Coral Gables, almost all the chatter is about Miami’s recent recruiting success. On the Rubbing the Rock, Clemson site, there is strong opinion the Tigers should leave the ACC. The chatter coming out of Tallahassee is either the B1G or the SEC would be fine, but being in the same conference with Florida and potentially Miami has strong appeal. However, I don’t think ACC schools with value can afford to be afraid to test the waters since all signs point toward the conference being fairly worthless in the next few years compared to the SEC and Big 10. Writing for Chop Chat, Kelvin Hunt said, As always, the ACC Conference is reactive instead of proactive, depending on their Grant of Rights to hold the conference together. In that vein, I checked out the three FanSided sites for Clemson, Miami and Florida State to glean the mood of their fans. But can it wait once it becomes obvious the ACC will fall apart? The Irish could be left with diminished independence or being forced to align with a weakened Big 12 or struggling Pac 12.įrom that perspective, the SEC raiding at least two of the top ACC targets could help the Big Ten. As Pat Forde commented, Notre Dame can wait patiently if it chooses. It could be that very soon, Kevin Warren will be encouraging those additions to the SEC in a real call to Greg Sankey. For the Big Ten, the Irish are a must-get, in that Notre Dame giving up independence for another conference would be a blow.Ī couple of days ago, while joking around about a fictional phone call between Greg Sankey and Big Ten Commissioner, Kevin Warren, I suggested the top SEC targets should be Clemson, Miami and Florida State. Notre Dame is not a must-get for the SEC. Pat Forde wrote on Monday that Notre Dame can and will play a waiting game. As a national brand, the Fighting Irish are the ultimate catch. If a major realignment is inevitable, as most college football experts think, then opportunities must be maximized. The business side of the college football world thinks a bit differently. Going along with that is an Alabama attitude of ‘bring on all comers’ bold enough to believe they can compete in the SEC. Alabama football fans are far more interested in recruiting and chasing 2022 championships. No one knows how long it will be before the next college football realignment move is made.
